Rachel & Robert Maternity Portraits - Virginia Beach

I love doing maternity portraits at many different places in and around Virginia Beach! It just depends on the time of day the client wants to do the photography session which kind of dictates the best places to shoot the photos. I try to take it easy on expecting Moms! I don’t want them walking too far, too fast, in hot weather over rough terrain. (I suppose that’s common sense?) ๐Ÿ˜‰

I shot Rachel and Robert’s wedding back in May of 2009! If you’d like to view some photos from their wedding you can see them on my wedding photography blog here . It was awesome to catch up with them!

They’re having a little girl about half way through August! I told Robert that he was pretty much done for. I know from experience that once I laid eyes on MY daughter, I was done for. She stole my heart.

So, I was up at 5AM this morning, ran 14.5 miles at 6AM, and was on location ready to shoot these photos by 9AM. Now they’re all edited and ready to go, and I’ve sent the link off to Rachel and Robert so they can view ALL the photos from the maternity portrait session. Same day! (that DEFINITELY doesn’t happen like that all the time, but it’s pretty cool when I can get a session processed the same day).

Hancock Family Portraits June 19th, 2011

I was pretty stoked when Shannon & Mary contacted me about doing family portraits for them last Sunday! I shot Shannon’s wedding 6 years ago at The Lesner Inn. Mary did all the floral design work for the wedding (and she did an OFF THE HOOK job doing it too.) Fast forward a few years, Mary and Shannon have a blooming floral business Palette of Petals , and I’ve been working with them for a couple years now, seeing them around at weddings that we’ve been mutually hired to do. It’s a great success story!

I shot Shannon’s bridal portraits at her parents’ house on the intercoastal waterway in Virginia Beach. WAY WAY south Virginia Beach. Darn near to North Carolina Virginia Beach. (I had to stop for two deer crossing the driveway on the way out for instance). Just a BEAUTIFUL setting out there. Where life just slows down to a pace that’s perfect for family to just “be themselves”. No rushing, no agenda, no fuss.

So, for the first shot of this family portrait, I suggested a bit of a “theme” for fun. That would be the bottom left image on the preview image above.

I shot pretty much every combination of this family that I could including all the kids individually, and a couple head shots and 1/2 – 3/4 lengths of Shannon and Mary so they could use them for their business.

So, if you’re looking for a Virginia Beach Family Portrait Photographer who doesn’t mind one bit coming to you? Give me a call. 757-368-7800

Bill Murray - Fun family portrait session last Sunday! Shannon Hancock Hart and Mary Hancock of Palette of Petals! Every time I’ve shot photos out there at their parent’s house, I’ve had to avoid running over a deer or two on the way out of the driveway! I love that place!ReplyCancel

I had the pleasure of shooting the “I Do” Magazine fall/winter edition launch party for Michelle Kilgore, owner of Weddings By Michelle and creator of this new publication which highlights the talents of the “best of the best” of Hampton Roads wedding professionals.

It’s always a lot of fun when we get a chance to get together and “let our hair down” so to speak. (well, some of us have hair to let down, I can’t include myself in THAT category!) Many of us only see each other at weddings and it’s generally in random cycles that we actually DO see each other at all. But, Michelle has a way of getting people together and throwing AMAZING parties.

I REALLY appreciate these get togethers because it’s a great opportunity to talk with other photographers in the area. Obviously, we NEVER see each other at events because we’re all at different events. (I guess that’s a Captain Obvious moment!) It’s also wonderful to see all the other talented and dedicated TRUE professionals in our industry.

I shot a lot of photos at the event, but I just culled around 100 to make a slide show with. Enjoy ๐Ÿ™‚

Thanks Michelle!

Altmeyer Family Portraits June 12th, 2011

YES! I do family portraits! In fact I do them quite often. By and large I’m known primarily as a wedding photographer, but I do “environmental” family portraits in Virginia Beach and the surrounding areas in Hampton Roads simply because I really enjoy doing them. 99% of the time it’s by word of mouth referral that I get family portrait clients or they’re family or friends of couples I’ve done weddings for.

By “environmental” portraits I mean where you live, work, play, or a place you just “like”. I don’t dictate where the photos are taken, but I DO scout the location that you’ve picked to determine 1. if it’s feasible to shoot portraits there. If number 1 is a YES, then 2. what’s the right time of day to shoot the portraits. I come to you basically, you don’t come to me. People tend to be more comfortable in familiar surroundings, and if the location is the portrait client’s home all the better. It’s close to hair brushes, make up and clothing changes. ๐Ÿ˜‰

This particular family portrait assignment is being shot in 3 parts. Two “family units” were here in town this past weekend so I scouted the location and determined the right time of day to do them. Trouble is, sometimes the weather has other plans. We had a BUNCH of heavy thunderstorms within an hour of the session at the location so the ground was SOAKED. So, I had to do all the groups they had in mind and I had in mind standing. So, while not able to use a bit of creativity in arranging the groups I just had to make do with what I had in that environment.

I bring studio grade lighting with me, so I’m able to do these types of family portraits virtually anywhere.

Part 2 of this portrait assignment will be next month when the other two “family units” will be in town. I’ll most likely use the same location at their request. (hopefully it won’t rain next time, because I was shooting between showers at this last session)

Part 3 will be 7 toy poodles! YES, SEVEN OF THEM at the SAME TIME! (THAT is going to be FUN!) So, between part 1 and part 2 I’m around the dogs enough that they know me, and I bribe them a little and they associate me with “fun stuff”. So, part 3 will be a piece of cake. (or a milk bone)

So, keep me in mind for your family portraits in Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Chesapeake, Portsmouth, Hampton, Newport News and all of the surrounding Hampton Roads region. ๐Ÿ™‚
